LAGUNA VASE ONE
Stacey Carr 2018
Black on Red Clay
Stacey is one of the most creative and innovative contemporary potters in the Laguna Pueblo whose work may be found in a number of public and private collections.
While many of the Pueblo’s potters use grey clay mined in and around the pueblo, Stacey prefers to use non-traditional red clay he harvests from the canyons near his home. “These clays are much more challenging, but they produce the deep, intense color that is a hallmark of my work.” He often chooses to paint his red clay pottery with paints derived from local vegetation which creates a beautiful contrast against the red.
Stacey’s works included in our collection display the unique shapes, designs, and color palettes that have come to define his work. Both the complex black on red geometric design olla and the soft winter white and earth tone water jar reflect Stacey’s unique vision and modern interpretation of timeless Laguna designs. Each was acquired directly from the artist.
